  • Swords to Plowshares: Transforming Guns to Garden Tools
  • Location: > See description for location

  • Description: The UMass Dartmouth Episcopal Campus Ministry and the LeDuc Center for Civic Engagement are co-sponsoring an important Gun Violence Awareness event on campus called "SWORDS TO PLOWSHARES: TRANSFORMING GUNS INTO GARDEN TOOLS" on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, from 12:00-2:00 PM on the Campus Center Quad. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to participate in the OUTDOOR ANVIL AND FORGE DEMONSTRATION using blacksmithing techniques. Previously surrendered gun barrels will be transformed into garden tools. The demonstration is presented by the New Haven based Swords to Plowshares Northeast. https://www.s2pnortheast.org/ The blacksmith will be the Right Reverend James E. Curry, retired Bishop Suffragan of the Episcopal Church in Connecticut, a founding member of Bishops United Against Gun Violence. The organization sees as its mission to build coalitions of community groups that will build a sustainable effort to help reduce gun violence. The forge as Bishop Curry notes, "is just one strategy, one prong in a multipronged approach toward changing the attitude toward gun violence in our community." Bishop Alan M. Gates, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts, will be present and will speak at the event. Everyone is invited to attend this campus-wide event, regardless of religious affiliation, to raise awareness around the issue of gun violence. ALL ARE WELCOME!

  • ECE Seminar* Sparse Sampling to Maximize Detection of a Known Signal in Nonwhite Gaussian Noise
  • Location: > See description for location

  • Contact: > See Description for contact information
  • Description: Topic: Sparse Sampling to Maximize Detection of a Known Signal in Nonwhite Gaussian Noise Speaker: Dr. Kaushallya Adhikari, Assistant Professor, Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering, University of Rhode Island Location: Science & Engineering Building (SENG), Room 222 Abstract: We address the problem of sparse sampling pattern design to maximize detection for a deterministic signal in colored noise. We model a colored noise as a continuous-time autoregressive process, which is obtained by passing a white noise through a causal linear-time invariant filter. This noise modeling is crucial to the development of the optimal sampling pattern design for a given number of sensors. We obtain a closed form expression for the whitening filter and consequently, for the Kullback-Leibler divergence at the whitening filter output, which is the detection index. The optimum sampling pattern is obtained by evaluating the detection index at Nyquist sampling rate, rank ordering the samples, and selecting the maximum values. We present some examples to illustrate the proposed procedure. We also extend our method to two-dimensional sampling. The advantage of our approach is its low computational complexity for both one-dimensional and two-dimensional cases and that optimality is guaranteed. Biography: Kaushallya Adhikari is an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Rhode Island. She earned M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in 2011 and 2016, respectively. She received the EURASIP Best Paper Award in 2018 for a journal article in Signal Processing. She teaches courses in Signal Processing. Her research focuses on Array Signal Processing. Her current research has been sponsored by the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Program. This research is on using Information Theory to design sparse sampling patterns, maximizing the detection of signals. The Seminar is open to the public free of charge. *For further information, please contact Dr. John R. Buck via email at jbuck@umassd.edu.

Particle image velocimetry (PIV) is a novel machine vision technique for non-invasively diagnosing particulate flows. The motion in both particle phase and fluid phase can be spatially and temporally resolved. In this talk, I will discuss how to employ the PIV technique to measure the flow field in biomedical and biological systems, with emphases on both fundamental discovery and engineering applications. Specifically, I will present three examples, namely (1) flow dynamics in auto-injection drug delivery devices, where fluid shear/strain rate are being compared at different sloshing sensorial; (2) hemodynamics in cerebral aneurysm, where strategies of validation and verification between experiment and simulation are discussed; and (3) swarm dynamics in mosquitos, where the acoustic effect on mosquito flight dynamics are quantified. BIO: Dr. Zhongwang Dou is an Assistant Professor at Northern Arizona University. He was a postdoctoral research associate at the School of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University. In this role, Dr. Dou works on advancing the fundamental understanding of fluid dynamics in drug-delivery medical devices through the development and employment of novel flow measurement techniques. Before joining Purdue, Dr. Dou worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, where he utilized particle image velocimetry to discover the potential feasibility of using acoustics to prevent mosquito-borne disease. Dr. Dou also worked as a research scientist at the Canon Strokes & Vascular Research Center, focusing on experimental validation of hemodynamics in the cerebral aneurysm. Dr. Dou received his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from University at Buffalo in 2017, and B.Eng in Thermal Science and Energy Engineering from University of Science and Technology of China in 2012. Dr. Dou has authored more than a dozen archival publications in journals and conferences such as Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Journal of Biomechanical Engineering, Current Medical Research and Opinion, Scientific Reports, and Experiments in Fluids. For more information please contact Dr. Hangjian Ling, MNE Seminar Coordinator (hling1@umassd.edu). All are welcome. Students taking MNE-500 are REQUIRED to attend! All other MNE BS and MS students are encouraged to attend. EAS students are also encouraged to attend.

  • Description: EARTH DAY 2023 APRIL 22 New Bedford Whaling Museum Theatre SOUTHCOAST FILM FORUM announces a special Earth Day Screening of the new film WILD LIFE, the story of the visionary effort to effect the largest private land donation in history-- over 14 million acres conserved in 17 national parks in Patagonia. After falling in love in midlife, former Patagonia CEO Kris Tompkins and outdoorsman and entrepreneur Doug Tompkins left behind the world of the massively successful outdoor brands they’d helped pioneer — Patagonia, The North Face, and Esprit — and turned their attention to creating National Parks throughout Chile and Argentina. "Free Solo" filmmakers and Academy Award-winners Jimmy Chin and Chai Vasarhelyi produced this extraordinary documentary, with gorgeous landscapes and thrilling Patagonia scenery along with archival footage of the challenges they faced, and their unique love story.
