  • Description: Tuesday, October 14, – 12:30-1:30pm in OFD Lounge Facilitated by Cathy Smilan On the recommendation of the faculty, OFD is piloting a book club session this semester. OFD's book club selection for Fall 2014 is Active Learning: Cooperation in the College Classroom by Johnson, Johnson & Smith. Beyond assigning groups of students to work together on projects, this college-level based text addresses the role assignment, fostering interdependence, scope and sequence planning and time management for using cooperation in the classroom. The text is a follow-up to the September 8 workshop on Cooperative Learning faciliated by Lorraine Cross, a Johnson and Johnson trained educator. Participants will receive a complimentary copy of the text and join in monthly discussions about this teaching strategy. Ms. Cross will be available via Skype at the book club sessions to answer questions related to the methodology. We look forward to active participation through discussion of the reading and examples from your classrooms. Book: Active Learning: Cooperation in the College Classroom (2006, 8th Edition). David and Roger Johnson and Karl Smith. (a limited number of copies will be available to participants). Lunch will be served in all sessions; if you wish to attend any session, please register through the Events calendar on UMD website.

  • Introduction to Photoshop, Part 3

  • Description: The last workshop in the three part series covers the use of Photoshop’s layer features. Users assemble a collage from separate documents, and use layers to organize and define the final image. An adjustment layer is used to perform color correction. Also covered are text layers, and layer styles. Finally, cropping and image size changes are covered, as well as saving documents as different file formats. Previous Photoshop experience, or Part 1 of the Introduction class is required. This workshop takes place in the Library, room 226.   • Description: Wednesday, October 15, 12-1:30pm in OFD Lounge The Office of Faculty Development’s Writing Group for Faculty provides UMass Dartmouth faculty with a structured yet flexible forum for discussing and stimulating their ongoing writing projects. The group will meet every three weeks on Wednesday in the OFD Lounge. Lunch will be provided. Regular participation throughout the academic year is encouraged, but drop-ins are welcome.   • Description: This workshop provides a practical introduction to Microsoft Excel. Hands-on practice with Excel allows participants to learn the skills needed to set up a spreadsheet, make keyboard entries, and perform calculations. Participants learn to produce worksheets such as budgets and payrolls. Formatting, using formulas and simple functions are introduced. No previous Excel experience is needed.
