« 2/11 - 3/11 »	Online Teaching and Learning Strategies Location: Online Contact: CITS Instructional Development Description: In this course, we will introduce you to current research and best practices for both online and blended teaching as well as showcase examples of successful teaching strategies for both methodologies. Throughout the course you will work both independently and collaboratively with your peers to gain valuable online course transition experience and develop strategies in online teaching and learning. As a participant, you will learn both pedagogical aspects of teaching online as well as how to use and incorporate many of the tools available in the myCourses Learning Management System used at UMD. The ultimate goal of the course is to have you begin planning, organizing and building the course you eventually plan to teach. In addition, this course will introduce you to tools that will teach you how to self-assess course site design to ensure student ease of access to course content and to facilitate more streamlined student learning and retention. « 2/12 - 3/26 »	The Uncommon Object - University Art Gallery, New Bedford Location: CVPA: College of Visual and Performing Arts , 285 Old Westport Road, Dartmouth, MA Contact: University Art Gallery Description: For this group exhibition, ten alumni from the renown UMass Dartmouth Ceramics program invited artists who have been influential in a manner contrary to their aesthetic, finding pairings revealing an unusual logic; a connection in uncommon objects. "The Uncommon Object" was conceived by Rebecca Hutchinson and Jim Lawton with the notion that our counterpoint is not only interesting but offers insight into the depth of who we are as artists. The exhibition is part of the programming for the 49th annual National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) conference in Providence, RI which has earned a reputation worldwide as a premier event for ceramic art, drawing thousands of participants each year. During the past five years, there have been nine Faculty Fulbright winners at UMass Dartmouth. Congratulations on their successful applications! To inspire and facilitate future Fulbright applications, the Provost and Office of Faculty Development are sponsoring a Fulbright Information Session for all UMD faculty. Fulbright applications are due in the early August, so Spring/Summer is the time to formulate and write your proposal! At the info session, recent UMD Fulbright grant winners will talk about the process by which they formulated their proposals and prepared their applications. Also, a national Fulbright representative will outline the various awards available to faculty through the Fulbright program. At this session you will: • Explore the World of Fulbright Opportunities • Learn about: * How to formulate a strong proposal * How to navigate the application process Date: Monday, 2 March 2015. 10:00 AM - 4/1 »	Together: Junior Artists of the Department of Visual Design Location: CVPA: College of Visual and Performing Arts , 285 Old Westport Road, Dartmouth, MA Contact: University Art Gallery Description: UMass Dartmouth College of Visual and Performing Arts presents Together: Junior Artists of the Department of Visual Design Featuring recent student work from Digital Media, Graphic Design, Illustration, and Photography Exhibition Dates: 3/2- 4/1 Reception: Tuesday, March 3rd, 4 pm to 6 pm Artist Talk at 5 pm during the reception, titled Re.Membered: The Art of Collaboration The UMass Dartmouth College of Visual and Performing Arts is pleased to present the third annual Together: Junior Artists of the Department of Visual Design on display from March 2 through April 1, 2015. The opening reception will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 4 to 6 pm, with the Artist Talk, presented by students of both Design and Art History at 5 pm. This exhibition features recent work from students in Digital Media, Graphic Design, Illustration, and Photography, along with a slide show of these same young artists engaged in activities and processes relative to their CVPA experience. The Department of Visual Design is a cluster of professionally-oriented options: Digital Media, Graphic Design, Illustration, and Photography. Visual design is an art form, a craft, and a means of information dissemination for education, business, commerce, editorial and entertainment industries. Students earning their BFA in one of these four areas explore visual communication in the widest sense, employing both traditional (analog) and contemporary electronic and computer technologies. The examples in this exhibition demonstrate that our broadly educated student visual artists/designers are both literate and articulate and capable of participating on many levels of a wide variety of projects. Bringing together both print and digital media, this exhibition provides insight into how Junior students use visual design as a method of communication. 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM	Faculty & Staff Mindfulness Meditation Location: > See description for location Contact: > See Description for contact information Description: Faculty & Staff Mindfulness Meditation Weekly meeting for faculty and staff who are interested in learning about and practicing mindfulness meditation. This technique has been shown to increase cortical density in areas of the brain associated with cognitive and attentional control and emotional regulation. Practice with mindfulness meditation has been found to reduce anxiety and stress, increase attentional abilities and supplement socio-emotional functioning. No experience is required, and drop-ins are more than welcome. This event is to repeat weekly for the Spring 2015 semester, excluding Feb. 17th and March 17th. We are having a candlelight vigil in response. The vigil is sponsored by the Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, Catholic Campus Ministries, the Center for Jewish Culture, the Muslim Students' Association and with the support of a multitude of other campus groups. 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM	Joint Mechanical Engineering and Engineering & Applied Science (MNE-EAS) Seminar Location: Textiles Building 101E Contact: Mechanical Engineering Department Description: Joint MNE-EAS Seminar Friday, March 6th 2015 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Textile Building, Room 101E SPEAKER: Dr. Yahya Modarres-Sadeghi, Assistant Professor Mechanical & Industrial Engineering Department at UMass Amherst TOPIC: Fluid-Structure Interactions: From Fundamentals to Applications in Offshore Wind Energy Research ABSTRACT: When a flexible or flexibly-mounted structure is in contact with flow, it could deform or oscillate due to the fluid forces. The deformation or oscillation of the structure changes the fluid forces, which in turn result in a different structural response. This constitutes a fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problem. In a floating wind turbine, many examples of FSI are observed. Large wind turbine blades, which are ideal for offshore wind turbines, are susceptible to various flow- induced dynamical instabilities. A spar-type floating turbine can undergo vortex-induced vibration (VIV). In this talk I will show some recent results on flow-induced instabilities of wind turbine blades, and I will discuss VIV of a spar buoy, modeled after one of the existing large- scale floating wind turbines. I will discuss how some fundamental studies on FSI problems are critical in understanding the observed phenomena in floating wind turbines. BIO: Dr. Yahya Modarres-Sadeghi received the PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering from McGill University in 2006. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at MIT for 3 years. He has been an Assistant Professor at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst since 2009. His research interests include fluid-structure interactions, nonlinear dynamics, offshore wind energy and biomimetics. Throughout the course you will work both independently and collaboratively with your peers to gain valuable online course transition experience and develop strategies in online teaching and learning. As a participant, you will learn both pedagogical aspects of teaching online as well as how to use and incorporate many of the tools available in the myCourses Learning Management System used at UMD. The ultimate goal of the course is to have you begin planning, organizing and building the course you eventually plan to teach. The opening reception will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 4 to 6 pm, with the Artist Talk, presented by students of both Design and Art History at 5 pm. This exhibition features recent work from students in Digital Media, Graphic Design, Illustration, and Photography, along with a slide show of these same young artists engaged in activities and processes relative to their CVPA experience. The Department of Visual Design is a cluster of professionally-oriented options: Digital Media, Graphic Design, Illustration, and Photography. Visual design is an art form, a craft, and a means of information dissemination for education, business, commerce, editorial and entertainment industries. Students earning their BFA in one of these four areas explore visual communication in the widest sense, employing both traditional (analog) and contemporary electronic and computer technologies. The examples in this exhibition demonstrate that our broadly educated student visual artists/designers are both literate and articulate and capable of participating on many levels of a wide variety of projects. Bringing together both print and digital media, this exhibition provides insight into how Junior students use visual design as a method of communication. "The Uncommon Object" was conceived by Rebecca Hutchinson and Jim Lawton with the notion that our counterpoint is not only interesting but offers insight into the depth of who we are as artists. The exhibition is part of the programming for the 49th annual National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) conference in Providence, RI which has earned a reputation worldwide as a premier event for ceramic art, drawing thousands of participants each year.
