  • Joint Mechanical Engineering (MNE) and Engineering Applied Science (EAS) Seminar
  • Location: Textiles Building 101E
  • Contact: Mechanical Engineering Department
  • Description: Joint Mechanical Engineering (MNE) & Engineering Applied Science (EAS) Seminar March 20, 2017 11:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. Textile Building, Room 101E SPEAKER: Dr. Jun Li, Department of Mechanical Engineering, UMass Dartmouth TOPIC: Multiscale Materials Modeling and Application in Aerospace, Biomedical Engineering and 3D Printing ABSTRACT: Multiscale approaches of materials modeling are coming of age and represent a technology shift. The use of computation to understand and even design multiscale materials is becoming a trend. However, the predictive power of computational simulations is hindered by enormous information across multiple scales. In this talk, I will discuss examples from aerospace, biomedical engineering and 3D printing with the aim of developing effective multiscale approaches in application. First, I will present a top-down approach to model viscoelastic polymer thin film up to yielding for the NASA Superpressure Balloon. An anisotropic continuum membrane model was developed using a modified free volume theory based on the microscopic molecular mobility. This allows the macroscopic model calibrated to capture experimental results of both long-duration uniaxial tension and biaxial inflation over a wide temperature range for balloon design. Second, I will briefly discuss a bottom-up approach to model elastic modulus of trabecular bone. The model employs lamination theories, micromechanics and cellular solids at hierarchical levels spanning from the collagen-mineral nanoscale to the trabecular architecture level, using experimental inputs from SEM, Micro-CT, and optical microscopy at each level. Finally, I will present a workflow integrating topology optimization, multiscale modeling, and 3D printing for material-by-design. BIO: Dr. Jun Li joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth as an assistant professor in September 2016. He has industrial experience as a R&D quality assurance manager at Dassault Systemes Simulia Corp before joining UMass Dartmouth. Prior to that, he was a postdoctoral scholar at the Graduate Aerospace Laboratories in the California Institute of Technology. He obtained his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he also earned M.S. degrees in Mathematics and in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. He completed his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Mathematics from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. His research interest is to develop theoretical and computational methods combined with experiments for the assessment, design, optimization and manufacturing of novel materials and structures in various applications. For more information please contact Dr. Mehdi Raessi, MNE Seminar Coordinator (mraessi@umassd.edu, 508-999-8496) Light refreshments will be served. All are welcome! Students taking MNE-500 are REQUIRED to attend! All other MNE students are encouraged to attend. Graduate (MS) and undergraduate (BS) students who are looking for a graduate thesis project or undergraduate research opportunities are encouraged to attend! EAS students are encouraged to attend! Thank you, Sue Cunha, Administrative Assistant scunha@umassd.edu 508-999-8492

  • Women, Art and Fibers: Contemporary Responses to Abolition and the Journey North
  • Location: CVPA: College of Visual and Performing Arts , 285 Old Westport Road, Dartmouth, MA
  • Contact: University Art Gallery
  • Description: Location: CVPA Campus Gallery, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 285 Old Westport Road, North Dartmouth Exhibition dates: March 8, 2017 - April 4, 2017 Opening Reception: Wednesday, March 8, 4-6 pm, Comments by the Artists: 5 pm Guest-Curated by Laurie Carlson Steger and Dr. Memory Holloway Exhibiting Artists: Cathryn Amidei, Suzi Ballenger, Laurie Carlson Steger, Sonja Dahl, Barbara Eychaner, Brooks Harris Stevens, Karen Hampton, Margaret Leininger, Faith Ringgold, Linda Rhynard, Marcia Weiss, plus members of the Sisters in Stitches Joined by the Cloth Quilt group, Naomi Henry, Lesyslie Rackard, Christie Rawlins-Jackson, Kimberly Radcliffe, and Susi Ryan Women, Art and Fibers: Contemporary Responses to Abolition and The Journey North, focuses on the influences of the slave trade, the whaling industry and the textile industry which linked New Bedford MA and Savannah, GA. The exhibition, hguest-curated by Laurie Carlson Steger and Dr. Memory Holloway, with work by fifteen fiber artists from across the nation, includes historic garments from the Rotch-Jones Duff House and Garden Museum as well as a story quilt from the New Bedford Historical Society. The opening reception with the comments by the artists is held on Wednesday, March 8, from 4 to 6 pm. Visitors are advised to use Parking Lot 7. An exhibition catalog written by Dr. Memory Holloway, will be available. The selected works respond to local Quaker and abolitionist histories and stories of the enslaved who escaped via the Underground Railroad, often passing through New Bedford. Traditional and contemporary textile techniques and materials create artworks of compelling solidarity and stature that unite a diverse community. The exhibition is held in conjunction with International Women's Month, and New Bedford's Fiber Art Month. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Dartmouth Cultural Council, which is a local agency supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. Additionally, we would like to thank the following for their generous assistance in making this exhibition possible: ACA Galleries in New York City, LCH Designs, New Bedford Historical Society, Rotch-Jones-Duff House and Garden, Sisters in Stitches Joined by the Cloth with special thanks to Anderson Airmotive Products Company Inc., Fall River, MA.
