Abstract: With decreasing stability of the Gulf Stream (GS), its meanders have interacted with the Mid-Atlantic Bight continental shelf and slope sea region more frequently. The implications of these increased intrusions for regional biological productivity are unknown but have been thought to potentially reduce overall productivity by introducing low-nutrient, oligotrophic Gulf Stream water to the otherwise productive shelf edge region. However, we present evidence of intense subsurface diatom hotspots in the Mid-Atlantic Bight (MAB) slope sea that likely resulted from a GS intrusion in July 2019. The hotspots (at ~50 m) were associated with water mass properties typical of GS water (~100 m); it is likely that the hotspots resulted from the upwelling of Gulf Stream water while being transporting into the slope sea, likely by a Gulf Stream meander directly intruding onto the continental slope east of the observed hotspots. By their subsurface nature, these chlorophyll hotspots were not detected by satellites; understanding how increasingly frequent direct GS intrusions will impact MAB marine ecosystems will therefore require ongoing physical and biogeochemical measurements of the entire water column.
