Description: Topic: Seagliders Sensing Subsea Sound

Speaker: Dr. Lora Van Uffelen, Department of Ocean Engineering, University of Rhode Island

Location: Science & Engineering Building (SENG), Room 117

Abstract:
Seagliders are Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) designed to be deployed for several months at a time. They are capable of diving to 1000 m depth and communicate with an onshore base station computer via Iridium satellite when at the surface between dives. These platforms can accommodate a variety of oceanographic sensors, but here we specifically consider Seagliders equipped with hydrophones to record underwater sound. Acoustic data collected using these platforms are used for long-range underwater acoustic propagation research, for studies of marine mammal vocalizations, and for glider navigation, including under-ice navigation. The technology and applications of acoustic Seagliders will be discussed, and preliminary results from a recent deployment in the Arctic Ocean will be presented.

Biography:
Dr. Lora Van Uffelen is a new Assistant Professor in the Department of Ocean Engineering at the University of Rhode Island. Prior to moving to the East Coast she was a research affiliate at the University of Hawaii. She earned her Ph.D. in Oceanography from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, and has a B.S. in Engineering. Her primary research interests are underwater acoustics, oceanic variability, and oceanographic instrumentation and technology. She particularly enjoys fieldwork and has participated in more than 20 research cruises with over 400 days at sea.

The Seminars is open to the public free of charge.
