Master of Science Project Presentation
by Mr. Richard J. Bellizzi

DATE:
December 6, 2017

TIME:
1:00 p.m. 2:30 p.m.

LOCATION:
Charlton College of Business (CCB), Room 306

TOPIC:
Development and Optimization of Fretting Solutions Using Design of Experimental Methods

ABSTRACT:
The effect of fretting wear applies to numerous industries wherever electrical connector technology is found. Nye Lubricants is a specialty lubrication company with several solutions to this fretting condition. The addition of a lubricant to the mating surfaces provides a protective layer that lubricates and protects from abrasive wear and the environment. As part of this initiative, the company is researching various formulations that seek to minimize manufacturing cost and increase the life of the connectors. Finding a balance between performance and cost of the product provides customers with a feasible solution to their premature electrical failures. The focus of this project centers on discovering a new line of connector lubricants that can meet both of those conditions. Current performance levels must be maintained or improved without significantly increasing manufacturing costs. Design of Experiments and Optimization methods are used to explore and rationalize alternative formulations that branch away from the existing group of formulations. This study allowed for various tests to be performed on a wider scope of formulations to glean a better understanding of other possible options. Having multiple alternative solutions will address everchanging consumer requirements, while further equipping Nye Lubricants as they continue to support the industry with state of the art Electrical Connector Lubricants.
