ABSTRACT:
In Computational Electromagnetics, the Method of Moments (MoM) technique is one of the most widely used techniques for solving integral equations derived from scattering and radiation problems. In this study, an alternative approach known as Extended Image Theory (EIT) is developed to reduce the computational complexity of analyzing electromagnetic scattering and radiation. The Green’s function is the kernel of the integral equation which relates the induced currents (sources) to the scattered fields (observations). The EIT approach employs the addition theorem for Hankel and Bessel functions, to represent this Green’s function as a series sum of products of Bessel functions of source points and Hankel functions of observation points. Using the addition theorem, spectral signatures are defined for the source points and observation points in terms of the Bessel and Hankel functions. In this formulation, the integral equation can then be written as the projection of the spectral signature of the sources onto the spectral signature of the observations points. The objective of the study is to test the validity of the extended image theory on infinitely long cylinders with elliptical cross sections and to explore the constraints and limitations of this new approach. Initial simulations indicate that for cylinders with small axial ratios, the EIT method compares well with MoM.
