Lecture: Rainer Weiss, Nobel Laureate in Physics

When: Friday, May 31, 2019
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Cost: This event is free and the public is welcome to attend. The lecture is part of the 22nd annual Eastern Gravity Meeting. Please park in Lots 13 & 14 on the main campus at 285 Old Westport Road.
Description: Nobel laureate and professor emeritus at MIT, Rainer Weiss, will discuss his work in gravitational waves and the future of astronomy.

Weiss, along with Kip Thorne and Barry Barish of the California Institute of Technology, were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2017 for their contributions to the observation and detection of gravitational waves from black holes.

Gravitational waves were a major component of Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity, but remained unseen until Weiss and his team's 2015 discovery. The instruments and methods for data analysis that enable the measurement of gravitational waves will be on display.
