Description: Join us for our 6th Annual Italian Film Series at UMass Dartmouth, co-sponsored by the Foreign Literature and Languages Department and the History Department.

Italian culture has always been profoundly influenced by Catholicism and by the presence of the Holy See in Rome. For centuries, Italian writers and artists have explored the way religion is woven into the lives of ordinary people and the way their religious experiences are often contested by different sources of authority - confessor and father, priest and prophet, bishop and revolutionary. Our films this semester explore the complexity of religious experience and the role of the Italian church in a variety of historical epochs: the Middle Ages, the Risorgimento (Unification), and the Dopoguerra (post-WWII).

Our next film, “We Have a Pope" [Habemus Papam] (2011) is “[a] comic and fictional exploration of the emotional struggles of a newly-elected pope coming to terms with the demands of his position" (Amazon Prime).

All films have English subtitles.
