Description: Join us for our 6th Annual Italian Film Series at UMass Dartmouth, co-sponsored by the Foreign Literature and Languages Department and the History Department.

Italian culture has always been profoundly influenced by Catholicism and by the presence of the Holy See in Rome. For centuries, Italian writers and artists have explored the way religion is woven into the lives of ordinary people and the way their religious experiences are often contested by different sources of authority - confessor and father, priest and prophet, bishop and revolutionary. Our films this semester explore the complexity of religious experience and the role of the Italian church in a variety of historical epochs: the Middle Ages, the Risorgimento (Unification), and the Dopoguerra (post-WWII).

For our third and final film, we will show “In the Name of the Pope King" [In nome del papa re] (1977):“In 1867 Italian patriots [fought] to unify the country. Rome stands alone, ruled by the Pope. Monsignor Colombo, a magistrate of the Papal State, is about to resign from his office when some young terrorists blow up the barracks of the government troops, the Zouaves. Only then he discovers that one of the suspects is his own 20-year-old natural son. A compelling story of intrigue, political conflict and murder unfolds, within a magnificent historical setting."

All films have English subtitles.
