Description: One hundred years after Benito Mussolini's 1922 March on Rome, Italians are still reckoning with the legacies of his regime. This year's film series looks back on the rise of that regime and the experience of fascism in Italy, with a particular emphasis on its moral consequences. We hope that these films provoke reflection not only on the past but on the rising tide of authoritarianism in our own world.
Our second film is Bernardo Bertolucci's Il Conformista (1970), which tells the story of Marcello, a secret police agent tasked with assassinating his former college mentor. A series of flashbacks trace Marcello's involvement with fascism, rooted in a desperate need to conform to social expectations.
Film is in Italian with English Subtitles.
