Description: As we return to campus, we anticipate the usual challenges of meeting our profession's needs and meeting our students where they are as learners. But we also confront the rapid, ongoing rise of artificial intelligence and its impact on academic work. Applications such as ChatGPT suggest a possible moment of panic, but they may also present a unique opportunity to pool our collective human intelligence to innovate pedagogically. Some questions we may explore: How do we engage with students who are increasingly harried and looking for shortcuts? To what ends might we leverage ChatGPT and other AI applications in the classroom and in our disciplinary work? How might we reach students through active learning and open-ended assignments that foster the real development of college-level thinking? (For more on this topic, consult our teaching resources, which now include a section on AI/ChatGPT.)
