Supporting Self-Directed Learning: Transparency, Metacognition, and Scaffolding

When: Wednesday, November 15, 2023
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Where: Claire T. Carney Library, Office of Faculty Development
Description: This lightning-round workshop will focus on supporting students in developing the skills of learning itself: pursuing practices of self-directed learning, discovering their own goals and motivations, and engaging with learning as a scaffolded process. Much of this skill-building relies on transparently working with students on metacognition skills and examining the difference between studying to achieve a grade versus studying to achieve a goal, and this workshop will examine how to make these skills and processes clear to students in both immediate and also long-term contexts. Our courses come equipped with learning outcomes, but what are the outcomes that the students themselves would like to pursue? How do we support them in naming and pursuing their own goals? And how do we work together to achieve, in tandem, the aims of our courses as well as the aims of students themselves?

This lighting-round is a part of the OFD's series on Redefining Rigor and Resilience, an ongoing initiative to engage with evolving faculty and student needs.
