Offshore wind development is a key part of US national and state strategies to reduce carbon emissions and help address climate change. Offshore wind projects are complex and take years to develop and permit. There are many factors involved in the siting, design, and successful execution of offshore wind development, including engagement with other ocean users. In particular, the commercial and recreational fishing sectors are primary ocean users that have substantial economic and cultural value to fishing communities throughout the United States. This seminar will review some of the primary concerns commercial and recreational fishing participants have about offshore wind development, as well as methods used to avoid, minimize and mitigate impacts on fishing communities. The overall phases of offshore wind development will be summarized, including examples of coexistence, or initiatives that support successful outcomes for fisheries and renewable energy development. Strong communication and collaboration are essential for successful co-use of these valuable marine spaces and resources.
