Abstract: Tautog (Tautoga onitis) is a relatively sedentary, slow-growing, and long-lived wrasse species, that supports valuable recreational and commercial fisheries in the North and Mid-Atlantic regions. The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries' synoptic trawl survey has provided an index of abundance for tautog since 1978. Abundance from this time series peaked in the 1980s after which it dramatically declined and has remained low through the present day. However, due to their preference for structured habitat, tautog are not well sampled with bottom-tending trawl gear. Bottom trawls are most effective when sampling featureless substrate (e.g., sand). This raises concern about the efficacy of using trawl-based abundance indices to determine stock status of structure dwelling fish. To evaluate an alternative survey methodology to monitor tautog abundance, we conducted a one year random depth-stratified hook and line pilot study to sample areas with complex bottom types (e.g., rock, cobble, boulder) in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. I will discuss how the preliminary results from this study, and the knowledge gained, are shaping our approach to monitoring tautog.
