Abstract
Predation can have a major impact on the structure and dynamics of marine populations and ecosystems, but the relative strength of predator control is highly variable across ecosystems. In this talk, I will discuss two major hypotheses that have been proposed to explain variability in the strength of predator control: the diversity and synchrony of predator assemblages. Across North America and Europe, we found a wide range in the diversity of predator assemblages, whereas in most assemblages we observed a consistent pattern of independently varying populations (neither synchronous nor asynchronous). In addition, accounting for the different feeding habits (diet and consumption rate) of each predator population is important in interpreting these results. Then, I will use mathematical models to study two different examples where predation may play an important role in driving the dynamics of managed fish populations: 1) lingcod predation on overfished rockfish populations in the California Current, and 2) the potential of high mortality of predators, as well as fishery closures, to explain the population-level resilience of nearshore fish and invertebrates to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
