Abstract:
It has long been thought that Gulf of Maine (GOM) winter flounder (Pseudopleuronectes americanus) migrate inshore into shallow bays and estuaries to spawn, followed by a return to offshore areas. However, over the past 10+ years, collaborative research-industry studies have resulted in changes to how we understand and think about winter flounder spawning movements. Through the use of acoustic telemetry, conventional tags, and bottom trawl surveys, it has been shown that winter flounder in this coastal stock are not estuarine dependent for spawning, and indeed, some fish spawn in much deeper and offshore waters than had been previously documented. In addition, other techniques like model simulations and analysis of trace elements in fish otoliths, can shed light on population structure and natal (or nursery) origin of pre-recruits. An overview of these studies will be discussed.
