Abstract:
With nearly 2.5 million acres of surface waters, coastal North Carolina has the second largest estuarine ecosystem on the U.S. Atlantic coast. Uniquely located at the biogeographic transition zone between temperate and tropical ecosystems, these coastal waters have both temperate (Zostera marina) and tropical (Halodule wrightii) seagrass species living at their respective “edge of ranges”. While recent surveys indicate that these are currently the largest and healthiest seagrass meadows on the Atlantic seaboard, stressors associated with climate change threaten the status of this ecosystem. This location in the western Atlantic Ocean is one of several global hotspots where poleward-flowing western boundary currents are forecast to warm faster than the global average. This, along with predictions of local sea level rise can affect the growth, distribution, abundance, and reproduction of seagrasses. My presentation addresses the unique resilience characteristics of this seagrass ecosystem and how it is poised to respond to both climate and anthropogenic disturbances.
