Abstract:
One of the most conspicuous oceanographic features observed off southeastern Brazil is the mesoscale cyclonic meanders of the Brazil Current between 20°S and 26°S. These frontal meanders exhibit a quasi-stationary nature and are occasionally shed as cyclonic rings that modulate the pelagic ecosystem of the region. As they grow, they transport enriched shelf waters offshore, contributing to vertical and horizontal exchanges of nutrients and particulate organic matter into the oligotrophic ocean basin. The presented work aims to examine the basic mechanisms involved in the dynamics of these phenomena and proposes answers to the questions (a) why the meanders are quasi-stationary as they grow, (b) what are their triggering mechanisms, and (c) how submesoscale processes associated with the meanders might affect the phytoplankton distribution using in situ observations and a hierarchy of hydrodynamic models coupled to a simplified ecological model.
