Leveling the Playing Field: Helping All Students Achieve Success

We are all aware of the fact that our students at UMass Dartmouth come to us with varying levels of academic preparation. But students also vary in their ability to navigate the “hidden curriculum” of the college environment. The “hidden curriculum,” according to Smith (2013), consists of the “norms, values, and expectations” that govern interaction among students, faculty and staff. For instance, Smith argues that one norm is that students should be comfortable with asking questions when they do not understand something, but students may suffer in silence because they do not feel they belong in college; asking such questions will “out” them as not belonging. In this workshop, we will talk about some of the challenges that our students face in navigating the college environment and present some tools that faculty can use to help students navigate this hidden curriculum and be successful. Presenters will share tips and tools with attendees, but we also encourage those attending to bring their own strategies and ideas to share.

Lunch will be served.
