- Description: Weaving with Light
CVPA Campus Gallery
Reception: Thursday, February 18 from 4-6 pm with the artist talk at 5 pm
UMass Dartmouth College of Visual & Performing Arts faculty and students are presenting their interactive Weaving with Light exhibition, recently showcased at the premier art fair SOFA CHICAGO through March 3, at the University's Campus Gallery. The installation pays tribute to the nearby city of New Bedford and its historical connection to the textile industry. A reception is scheduled for Thursday, February 18 from 4-6 p.m. with the artist talk at 5 pm at the gallery.
The Weaving With Light exhibition was designed to be highly interactive, enticing visitors to participate in the actual production of cloth, drawing their attention to the making process used by contemporary fiber artists. Within the exhibition, several operational single-person looms are arranged in a semicircle accompanied by the vintage still photos of mill buildings, interiors, and workers to illustrate some of the actual operations and conditions of historic mill life.
"Every step of the process has involved the discovery and problem solving aspects of design and making and realizing the full potential of the project through innovative methods, research and observation, material sourcing and testing, and overarching aesthetic decisions," Professor Hamlin said leading up to SOFA CHICAGO. "The students have extended themselves in both their intellectual and physical stamina."
The warp yarns that feed each loom rise from the front of the loom to a rattle gathering at the top of the wall. The ascending yarns create the illusion of an enclosed space to emulate the conditions of mill life.
Students and faculty traveled to Chicago this past November for the prestigious art exhibition dedicated to Sculpture, Objects and Functional Art (SOFA). Working on the Weaving with Light installation includes MFA Ceramics student Hanna Vogel, MFA Graphic Design student Kate Dickinson, MFA Wood/Furniture Design student John Middleton, MFA Digital Media student Alec Andersen, and BFA Textile Design/Fiber Arts students Tony Beal and Christopher Rogers. The group is being advised by Artisanry Professor James Lawton with assistance from Charlotte Hamlin, who serves as CVPA's coordinator for graduate studies and research, as well as CVPA Professional Technician Shingo Furukawa.
UMass Dartmouth was one of six entries selected for prestigious university art exhibition in Chicago, including Illinois Institute of Technology, Pratt Institute, San Diego State University, University of Cincinnati, and University of Iowa. SOFA CHICAGO ranked #7 in the USA Today Reader's Choice 10 Best Art Events.
UMass Dartmouth's CVPA Campus Gallery is located on the first floor of the CVPA Building on the Main Campus (285 Old Westport Road, Dartmouth, MA 02747). Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday 10am-4pm and Friday 10am-noon.

Abstract:
Multi-vehicle cooperation and coordination requires communication between vehicles to be effective. A great deal of progress has been made in multi-vehicle coordination using traditional wireless networks, among unmanned ground vehicles. In underwater environments, communication is limiting and difficult. In this talk we will present some progress we have made in improving multi-vehicle autonomy via strategies to overcoming the communication challenges.
There are many different Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols that are aimed at improving overall performance of underwater acoustic networks. One such MAC protocol is time division multiple access (TDMA), which assigns network nodes slots that allow each node to communicate during its own time frame. One of the biggest issues with TDMA is the latency that is introduced by assigning time slots. If a node needs to communicate it may have to wait multiple time slots before it is able to transmit. This is especially problematic in mobile networks that are event driven. By making TDMA more flexible and dynamic we hope to overcome some of the latency issues with TDMA. We show one approach to help mitigate latency issues with TDMA in a mobile underwater acoustic network using Mission Oriented Operating Suite (MOOS) as the back-seat driver. Results from several realistic scenarios are presented.

ORAL COMPREHENSIVE EXAM FOR DOCTORAL CANDIDACY BY: Keith D. Gilbert
- Location: Science & Engineering Building, Lester W. Cory Conference Room: Room 213A
- Cost: free
- Contact: ECE: Electrical & Computer Engineering Department
- Description: TOPIC: A MULTIPLE ALGORITHM APPROACH TO BLIND SOURCE SEPARATION
LOCATION: Lester W. Cory Conference Room, SENG-213A
ABSTRACT:
The general source separation problem involves estimating a set of sources from a set of observations in which the sources have been combined. The problem takes on several variants depending on what is known about the sources or the mixing system (blindness), the type of mixing system that produces the observations (linearity and delay dependence), and the number of sources relative to the number of unique mixtures (determinedness). The work presented here investigates the use of multiple source separation algorithms running in parallel to produce a composite set of source estimates, and the research focuses on blind separation of mutually, statistically independent sources from a set of linearly independent mixtures. A blind quality of separation (QoS) measure for a single source estimate that does not rely on other source estimates is derived that is based on information contained within the mixture set about the source estimate. This QoS measure is then applied to a competitive, multiple algorithm approach to the source separation problem, both in the instantaneous and convolutive cases, and results for selection-based and blending-based composite source estimates are given.

- Contact: University Art Gallery

Joint UMass Dartmouth Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Seminar Series*
- Location: LIB-206
- Cost: free
- Contact: > See Description for contact information
- Description: Topic: Multi-agent Autonomy in the Undersea Domain
Speakers: Dr. Thomas A. Wettergren, Dr. Lonnie Parker, Mr. Kyle DeMedeiros, Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Newport, RI
Location: Library 206
Abstract:
A rapid advancement in autonomy technology has recently led to a dramatic increase in the use of unmanned vehicles to explore difficult environments. When coupled with additional benefits obtained in the field of distributed sensing, this has led the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) to pursue multiple research efforts in autonomy for groups of unmanned vehicles.
The undersea domain presents a challenging environment for autonomous groups due to the relative sparsity of agents in the domain, the variety of tasks required of the agents, the uncertainties of underwater navigation, and the limited abilities of underwater communications. In this talk, we provide an overview of some of these challenges in multi-agent autonomy for undersea operations. We will showcase three recent research efforts being performed at NUWC: one on the use of animal foraging as a multi-agent search paradigm, one on a new approach to swarm intelligence for cooperating agents, and one on sensor-driven adjustments to behaviors for in-situ maximization of group goals. Principal investigators for each of these efforts will be presenting their recent results.
Biographies:
Thomas A. Wettergren received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering and the Ph.D. degree in applied mathematics, both from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. He joined the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, RI, in 1995, where he has served as a research scientist in the torpedo systems, sonar systems, and undersea combat systems departments. He currently serves as the US Navy Senior Technologist for Operational and Information Science, residing in the Office of the Chief Technology Officer of the Center. He also holds an appointment as an Adjunct Professor and Member of the Graduate Faculty at Pennsylvania State University. His current research interests are in the development of new approaches in the mathematical modeling, planning, and control of multi-agent systems in constrained environments.
Lonnie Parker received the B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering at the Rochester Institute of Technology in 2006. In 2012, he received the Ph.D. in Electrical & Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Since joining NUWC, he has worked across departments participating in autonomy-related work for unmanned undersea vehicles, ranging from simulation-¬â€based experiments to in-¬â€water trials. His current work investigates how acoustic communication may be leveraged for achieving multi-agent autonomy, developing experiments to validate current simulation tools and providing insight for in-¬â€water test performance.
Kyle DeMedeiros is a Computer Scientist for the Naval Undersea Warfare Center in Newport, Rhode Island. He received the Associate's degree in Computer Information Systems from Bristol Community College and both the B.S. and M.S. degrees in Computer Science from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. TOPIC:
Introductory Data Management Concepts
WORKFLOWS AND RELATED SOFTWARE:
Project Jupyter/IPython Notebook (these are coming under the same banner now; I've used the latter a little myself) and Taverna & VisTrails (VT being a project our own David Koop worked on at Utah). While I talk about workflow management I will make references to:
-How to discuss things like project/group management (how to discuss checking backups, or who works on what)
-Transfer of knowledge and documentation (what happens if someone were to leave, for example)
-Metadata standards (like Dublin Core)
Version Control Software
Git & Mercurial (I'll do a short comparison of the two as well; Git is the one I have used and am most familiar with). While I talk about Versioning, I will make references to:
-Best practices for file naming conventions (like ISO 8601 Date Format, for example)
-How many copies of your work to keep (Local/Near/Far, or the 3-2-1 rule of storage)
-Issues behind data sharing (privacy/security/funding mandates/publication/etc.).

TOPIC: Nulling of Signals Returned from Static Walls, Objects for Further Research in Motion Object Tracking Beyond Walls
LOCATION: Lester W. Cory Conference Room, Science & Engineering Building (Group II), Room 213A
ABSTRACT:
This project validates the existing WiVi system used to track objects behind walls by using WiFi 2.4G Hz signals. This allows for an affordable system to provide very expensive capabilities seen in other systems such as government security systems. The project uses the most recent technology. An Ettus X310 radio board is used, which interacts with GNU Radio and an Ettus UHD driver running on the latest Fedora v. 23 Linux operating system. The bulk of this project goes into dealing with static and iterative nulling of reflected signals. Due to the large amount of work that goes into nulling, follow-on work will focus on the tracking of objects behind walls, which involves interpreting the results into angles of tracked objects. The current capabilities discussed in this project are running both stages of nulling and transmission of signals against walls, which is vital in the success of tracking hidden, moving objects.
NOTE: All ECE Graduate Students are ENCOURAGED to attend.
All interested parties are invited to attend. Open to the public.
