Abstract:

The area around Cape Hatteras, NC, USA, is a region of intense exchange between the continental shelf and deep ocean. Convergence of shelf waters from the Middle Atlantic Bight (MAB) and the South Atlantic Bight results in net export of shelf waters, while both the nearby Gulf Stream and variable atmospheric forcing modulate the location and sign of instantaneous flow across the edge of the continental shelf. The ‘Processes driving Exchange At Cape Hatteras (PEACH)’ program used a variety of observational assets to characterize shelf-deep ocean exchange in the region during 2017-2019. As part of PEACH, Spray underwater gliders occupied a transect along the upper continental slope more than 100 times during a two-year period. These observations show that the export of shelf waters is largely episodic; 50% of MAB shelf water was exported during 17% of the observational period. The nature of these export events varies substantially in the observational record. Eddy (i.e., time-varying) fluxes of heat, salt, buoyancy, and momentum between the continental shelf and deep ocean indicate that the Hatteras region is a hotspot for eddy-induced shelf-deep ocean exchange, largely due to baroclinic instability associated with the shelfbreak front.
