“Hudson River Biological Monitoring Program: Opportunity and Challenge

Abstract:
The Hudson River Biological Monitoring Program (HRBMP) started in the 1970s to address concerns about the Indian Point nuclear power plant impacts on fishes in the Hudson River, especially striped bass. Various sampling programs were developed in the HRBMP to cover spatiotemporal distribution of different life stages of striped bass and other fishes. In addition to abundance data and biological samples, water quality data were also collected from the river-wide Water Quality Survey. The collected data and 50 million of archived biological specimens from the HRBMP were donated to the Stony Brook University School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences and are managed by the Chen lab. The data and samples collected in this long-term monitoring program provide a unique opportunity for developing studies to understand the impacts of climate and environmental changes and anthropogenic activities on the dynamics of Hudson River ecosystems and key fish populations. In this presentation, I will discuss the opportunity and challenge we face and collaborative research opportunity in using this invaluable resource to improve our understanding of ecosystem dynamics of a changing Hudson River estuary and beyond.


Bio:
Dr. Yong Chen is a Professor of Marine Science in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, State University of New York at Stony Brook. He received his PhD in1995 in Zoology from the University of Toronto in Canada. He started his career as a fisheries stock assessment scientist in the New South Wales Fisheries Department in Sydney, Australia in 1995. In 1997, he was appointed Assistant Professor and Associate Chair in fisheries conservation at Memorial University of Newfoundland. He moved to the University of Maine in 2000 and was promoted to the rank of Full Professor in 2007. He left the University of Maine for his current position at Stony Brook in 2021. Dr. Chen’s research focuses primarily on fisheries stock assessment, population dynamics, climate change, and international collaboration. Dr. Chen has authored and co-authored over 300 peer-reviewed papers in scientific journals and has received millions of dollars in competitive research support for over 100 projects. He is currently a member of the New England Fisheries Management Council’s Scientific and Statistical Committee and NOAA Atlantic Scientific Review Group.
