Abstract
Fisheries oceanography can be defined as the study of interactions between marine fish, their environments, and fisheries to understand their productivity and inform sustainable management of fisheries. Traditional fisheries science considered oceanographic interactions to explain recruitment dynamics (the production of eggs, larvae and post-larval stages), and current ecosystem approaches to fishery management also consider environmental factors at later life stages, habitat conservation, and the effects of climate change on fisheries. Massachusetts and New Bedford have a rich history of fishing, and the UMass Dartmouth School for Marine Science and Technology has contributed to New Bedford's status as the #1 economic fishing port in the country. The school's academic program and research portfolio range from physical oceanography to fishery economics - and everything between. Our interdisciplinary applications inform regional policy for fisheries and other marine industries. Most importantly, we train the next generation of fisheries oceanographers and fishery managers so they can confront the challenges of managing sustainable fisheries in a dynamic marine environment.
