Pre-Semester Workshop: Reset, Refresh, Renew: Rethinking Syllabi and Course Design as we Return to Campus

When: Wednesday, August 25, 2021
2:00 PM - 3:15 PM
Where: > See description for location
Description: Facilitator: Jay Zysk, Director, Office of Faculty Development

"It has to be more than just extending a due date, eliminating a reading, or revising an assignment," one student remarked when asked what instructors could do to better help their students navigate the unique academic circumstances brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. The essence of this comment speaks to the fact that COVID-19 has compelled faculty across disciplines to rethink not only the essential components of their courses but also, and with equal importance, the narratives by which course design, assessment, and instructional techniques are articulated to students in the course syllabus.

In this pre-semester workshop, we invite you to engage in a dialogue about some specific aspects of your syllabi and course design from the past three semesters of remote learning that you might consider implementing in your face-to-face and blended instruction this semester. Topics include but are not limited to: equity, empathy, and accessibility; grading and assessment; communication methods and practices; transparency about learning outcomes; and instructional technologies. What has teaching remotely amid a global pandemic taught you about your pedagogy, your students, and yourself? What skills, technologies, and assignments have you developed to meet this moment, and how will you adapt them to on-campus instruction? In what ways can you reset, refresh, and renew your approach to teaching and learning this semester?

To register for this pre-semester workshop and obtain the Zoom link and passcode, please email Ellen Mandly at emandly@umassd.edu.
Topical Areas: Faculty, Staff and Administrators, Faculty Development
