“Microplastics Around Nantucket Island: Land, Air and Sea”

Abstract:
Plastic is a prevalent and global source of pollution that can be transported via wind and water currents. Starting in 2019 we began measuring the abundance of microplastics in intertidal sands and surface seawater at 3 beaches (Surfside, Nantucket Harbor and Madaket Beach) on Nantucket Island to get baselines and to obtain information on how much plastic pollution was potentially impacting the island. Microplastics were found in all the beach sediment and water samples, with highest concentrations occurring in Nantucket Harbor and Madaket Beach. Sources of these microplastics may have been break-down of the larger macro-plastic debris or atmospheric deposition. While the occurrence of the microplastic pollution is not surprising as plastic has been found in all global environments. The microplastics are also present in the marine food web, with detection found in shellfish and seal scat. Recent work is suggesting some of the plastic debris found on the Nantucket beaches can also leach material that can impact plankton. This data will be discussed in terms of what is known and what is still unknown. ********************************************************************************
