Abstract:
Lateral exports of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA) via tidal exchange from highly productive coastal wetlands, such as intertidal saltmarshes and mangroves, are among the largest terms in the wetland carbon budget. These exports are mostly the results of high rates of aerobic and anaerobic respiration in wetland sediments. A significant portion of this exported carbon, mainly in the form of bicarbonate, should be stored in the ocean for thousands of years because of its long residence time. Such lateral exports should thus be accounted as part of the Blue Carbon generated in coastal wetlands. This potentially increases the current wetland blue carbon capacity by several folds, given that the relative magnitude of lateral fluxes vs. organic carbon (blue carbon) storage in wetland sediments. However, the fate of wetland-exported DIC and TA is mostly unknown, which limits our ability to assess Blue Carbon capacity via lateral exports. This synthesis talk presents the latest development in assessing lateral DIC and TA fluxes from a model saltmarsh system on Cape Cod, MA. It proposes a new framework of how to count lateral wetland carbon exports as Blue Carbon.

Bio:
Dr. Zhaohui Aleck Wang is an Associate Scientist with Tenure in the Department of Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). He is a marine chemist with expertise in aquatic/seawater carbonate chemistry, coastal carbon cycling, ocean acidification, blue carbon and carbon exports from intertidal wetlands, and in situ sensor technologies. His current projects focus on studying the impacts of ocean acidification on shellfish species (e.g., sea scallop) at in situ conditions, developing models to evaluate and project the carbonate system in coastal and shelf systems under climate changes, evaluating blue carbon exports from tidal salt marshes, and developing in situ sensors and sensor networks to study and monitor the coastal carbon cycle and ocean acidification. Aleck earned his M.S. in Oceanography from the University of New Hampshire in 1998 and his Ph.D. in Marine Sciences from the University of Georgia in 2003. He has been a scientist at WHOI since 2009.
