Advances in technology have always attended academic work. None in recent memory has produced as much dialogue and handwringing as those involving artificial intelligence and machine-aided writing. From the Chronicle of Higher Education to the editorial pages of the New York Times and local newspapers, the impressive ability of AI to produce credible and coherent responses to written work in academic settings, and the effect is may have on students, has produced a range of responses. Is this just another tool (like, say, a calculator), or is it unambiguous academic dishonesty? Given that students can - and already are - using AI writing in their coursework across disciplines, instructors are well advised to consider their own individual positions on the subject in order to continue to effectively engage learning and accomplishing course outcomes.
The OFD invites you to enter an opening dialogue on AI and writing. The dialogue seeks to explore three central and open-ended questions to inform members of the campus community and help them see the practical considerations one might consider:
What is AI writing anyway?
In what ways might I be worried about it, and must I?
What, if anything, might I do or be aware of as it becomes more a part of our sphere of concern?
This dialogue will not establish definitive protocols or policies but will invite people from across the campus to a central place to open up an exchange that has been, variously, a non-issue to alarmism on the order of world changing. This discussion will launch a series of OFD-led programming over the next year that will take up these questions separately, in more detail, and from different institutional and disciplinary perspectives. All are encouraged and bring their interests and questions, as writing relates to all courses and degree programs.
