Kate Frazer Rego: Skywoman Waits Site-specific installation and performance Spring Street Windows (Crapo Gallery)

When: Thursday, September 9, 2021
6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Where: Star Store, New Bedford Purchase Street, New Bedford
Description: New Bedford artist and CVPA alumna Kate Frazer Rego has a special project in "store" for the 20th anniversary of the Star Store Campus! She transformed the space of the Spring Street window and has created an unexpected and richly layered site-specific installation, entitled, Skywoman Waits, 2021.

Kate Frazer Rego explains, “This body of work explores many facets of connection and interpersonal transactions. This exchange of bodies and minds colliding has the potential to create magic and connection that are indeed a kind similarly possessed by Star Store. Connections made within these walls have burst forth from their doors and woven their way into our communities travelling beyond this small city that lit the world.

The relationships I was able to build with professors and mentors have lasted me my adult life and continue to inform my practice and steer my course as an artist, educator, and citizen. It is a wonderful thing to be able to honor those relationships and connections by opening up the Void and giving it life in a place which did so much to give me life."

Kate Frazer Rego invites visitors to experience her work from outside as well as inside of that Crapo Gallery space. During AHA! Night on September 9th, Skywoman will be descending from the "Void" and inhabiting this window exhibition from 6 to 8 pm.

Frazer Rego, known in New Bedford for her Labia Series, could be described as a multidisciplinary feminist artist. Her use of vibrant colors, creatures and beings from her own mythology and humor as a carrier of serious messages makes her sculptures, environments and performances one of the most unique in the contemporary South Coast art scene.

Kate Frazer Rego earned her BFA in Sculpture at UMass Dartmouth in 2009 and MFA from Boston University's College of Fine Art in 2011. She participated in Art in Odd Places: BODY, an international performance art festival in NYC in 2018 and will return for "House of AIOP: Bravura Outbreak" in 2021. Her upcoming solo show, Dance of the Grassmen, will open at the Co-Creative Center in October. She was included in the Cambridge Art Association's 2019 Emerging Artist Exhibition and continues to show her work nationally and in several private collections. Frazer Rego has been an art educator on the Southcoast for the past 11 years. She's taught for the past 10 years at Alma del Mar Public Charter School in New Bedford, MA and maintains a studio practice in her home.
