Abstract:
Ocean and atmosphere models are usually run in very coarse resolution compared to most of the turbulent energy cascade. The standard approach is to parameterize the turbulence expressed by an extra diffusion. Physics-based models are highly diffusive and do not capture the backscattering of the energy cascade to larger scales. More recent approaches have tried to use machine learning methods to solve this problem, but they are usually not generalizable. This work is a first step in investigating whether turbulence closures should be stochastic instead of deterministic. The main question is, how different is the subgrid stress between different noise-added ensembles for a given coarse-grained flow field?
