“MSKeyrun: building multispecies and ecosystem models of Georges Bank to support ecosystem-based fisheries management”

Abstract: Model “keyruns” are defined as “standardized model runs updated with recent data, producing agreed output” as reviewed by the ICES group WGSAM. MS-Keyrun is a project based on model development and testing of objectives that are based on general ecosystem based management questions as well as specific discussions regarding ecosystem-based fisheries management (EBFM) under development in New England. The project currently implements several place-based multispecies assessment models and one food web model of the Georges Bank Ecological Production Unit. Using a “place-based” approach means a common spatial footprint based on ecological production, which contrasts with the current species-based management system of stock-defined spatial footprints that differ by stock and species. Therefore, the input data for this project differs from the input data for most current stock assessments, and the results of these multispecies assessments are not directly comparable with current single species assessments. However, similar processes can be applied to evaluate these models. The goal of the MS-Keyrun project is twofold: 1) develop standard multispecies/ecosystem modeling datasets and 2) use those datasets to develop tools which will be technically reviewed for recommendations for further development and testing prior to consideration for use by management bodies. Here we describe the process of assembling the dataset and outline the models that have been developed to date. In addition we will describe the review process used by WGSAM. Moving forward, we will use this as an opportunity to address questions about the effects of management on the broader ecosystem, and about performance of assessment tools.


Bio: Dr. Sean Lucey is a member of the Ecosystem Dynamics and Assessment Branch at the Northeast Fisheries Science Center working on ecosystem modeling and integrated ecosystem assessments (IEAs). He started in the Ecosystem Surveys Branch as an at-sea biological technician working on our various surveys. He received his Masters degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and received his PhD in Marine Science and Technology from SMAST. His dissertation focused on developing an open source version in R of the popular Ecopath with Ecosim modeling software called Rpath. He also extended the functionality of this package to be more useful for management strategy evaluations. Sean has served on multiple regional, national, and international working groups. He is currently a member of the New England Fisheries Management Council's Ecosystem-based fisheries management plan development team and the national EBFM working group. He is also the northeast representative on the NOAA National IEA program’s steering committee.
