Abstract:
Approximately one hundred commercial fishing vessels on the Northeast Shelf now have oceanographic sensors installed on their fixed and mobile gear. Some have experimented with salinity monitors, cameras, tide guages, acoustic listening devices, and current meters but the primary focus has been collecting bottom temperatures. While some gear fitted with internally-recording devices
have returned more than two decades of hourly data from fixed locations, 50+ vessels have automatically reported over 19,000 haul-averaged bottom temperatures from 2015-2022 via satellite in real time. In the past year, several vessels were equipped with water column profilers to document the vertical stratification of temperature and a few are collecting records of dissolved oxygen. After quickly reviewing the project status and introducing new members of the team, the talk will focus on the potential use of the
temperature data by ocean modelers.
