Title: Italian Studies Seminar Series: Queenship in Villanis New Chronicle

Description:
Rala I. Diakite, Professor of Italian Studies at Fitchburg State University, in the context of recent discussions of medieval queenship, will give a talk exploring the role of queens in Villanis 14th century Florentine New Chronicle. The focus will be on the chroniclers depiction of power, authority and agency of women/queens during the tumultuous reign of Joanna I of Naples.

Rala Diakit is Professor of Italian and Italian Studies at Fitchburg State University in Massachusetts, where she teaches Italian language and culture. Her research interests center around Dante, medieval Italian literature and chronicles, theatre, and translation. She is joint author and translator, with Matthew Sneider (UMass Dartmouth), of The Final Book of Giovanni Villanis New Chronicle (Medieval Institute Press, 2016).

This event is part of the Italian Studies Seminar Series 2017, which is funded by the Provosts Departmental Seminar Series Grant for the Foreign Literature & Languages Department and History Department.
