SPEAKER:
Dr. Mingxi Zhou, Assistant Professor, Graduate School of Oceanography, University of Rhode Island (URI)

TOPIC:
Navigation and Autonomy Development on Marine Robots

ABSTRACT:
The development in Marine robotics, e.g., Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USV) and Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs), is growing at unprecedented pace serving the demands from oceanography, offshore industry, and defense sectors. They have been used extensively in a variety of missions and environments from littoral zones to polar regions and from sea surface to deep ocean.
In the Smart Ocean Systems Laboratory at the Graduate School of Oceanography, University of Rhode island, unmanned marine vehicles have been designed and deployed for many applications, such as iceberg mapping, under-ice navigation, ocean oxygen depletion, seafloor mapping and inland water monitoring. In this seminar, the presenter will focus on presenting marine technology development for iceberg mapping, seafloor reconnaissance, and underwater glider operations.

BIO:
Mingxi Zhou is an assistant professor in the Graduate School of Oceanography, and he is cross-appointed in the Ocean Engineering Department, College of Engineering. The research in his lab, the Smart Ocean Systems Laboratory, has an emphasis on marine robotics, especially in vehicle autonomy, underwater navigation, and new vehicle design. He received his Master's degree and PhD in Mechanical Engineering and Ocean and Naval Architectural Engineering in 2012 and 2017 from Memorial University in Canada. After his graduation, he worked for a robotic startup company in Canada and worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Memorial University from 2017 to 2018.
