Description: Italian Studies Faculty Panel Discussion
Date: Wednesday, October 21, 2020
Time: 3:00 PM
Place: Virtual (Zoom)

One hundred fifty years ago, Italian soldiers breached the Aurelian walls of Rome and captured the city, bringing to conclusion the long process of Risorgimento (Italian unification). In honor of this anniversary, Italian Studies will be holding a series of events this year reflecting on Italian unification and its consequences. In our first event, a panel of UMD faculty will discuss the background, events, and cultural impact of the Risorgimento.

Matthew Sneider will discuss the roots of nationalism in Italy and the political reforms and military developments that made possible the rise of a united Italy.

Rose Facchini will speak on the novel Confessions of an Italian (1867) and the tragically short life of its author, the Risorgimento patriot Ippolito Nievo who fought as one of Garibaldi's Thousand and died before his thirtieth birthday.

Memory Holloway will speak on the visual culture of the Risorgimento.
