Nonsuicidal self injury and recovery: What matters
Dr. Janis Whitlock
Cornell University
Nonsuicidal self-injury is intentionally hurting the body (e.g. cutting, burning etc..) but without suicidal intent. Because it often looks like a suicidal gesture it tends to evoke fear and confusion. Its very nature seems to defy deep instinctual human drives for self-preservation as well as strong social taboos related to self-inflicted injury. Much has been learned in the past decade and a half about what it is, why it works, and it's most common recovery trajectory. This presentation will review NSSI elementals and highlight several factors influential in recovery. It will conclude with a discussion of implications for intervention and treatment.

Janis Whitlock is a Research Scientist in the Bronfenbrenner Center for Translational Research at Cornell University. She is the founder and director of the Cornell Research Program on Self-Injury and Recovery. Her research is dedicated to linking science with efforts to support and enhance the lives of youth, especially in the areas of social and emotional health and well-being.

4:45 to 5:15pm, followed by questions
Multitasking in the lab and beyond
Dr. Nathan Ward
Tufts University
How do we begin to understand and improve our abilities to manage multiple streams of information (i.e., multitasking)? There are multiple cognitive mechanisms that support multitasking, such as task switching and dual tasking. This presentation will characterize multitasking, optimize multitasking, and consider individual differences in multitasking.

Nathan Ward is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Tufts University. His research is focused on understanding and improving the ability to manage multiple streams of information (i.e., multitasking) both in the lab and in real-world settings. To this end, Dr. Ward uses several approaches, ranging from simulated environments to speeded response times, in order to assess real-time multitasking performance in younger and older adults. Dr. Ward also relies on interventions like cognitive training, exercise, and low-current brain stimulation to modulate how people multitask under a variety of scenarios.
