Abstract: The Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen's Alliance was formed by a group of small independent fishermen in 1991. Day boat fishermen were concerned their livelihoods were at stake with threats of fish depletion and fishing regulations that did not align with what they were encountering on the water. For the last 30 years, the Fishermen's Alliance has stood shoulder to shoulder with local fishermen to meet the emerging challenges that fishermen face, and to empower local fishermen to create solutions that work for them. The fishing industry has faced many challenges: a warming ocean, changing fish distribution, industrial fishing interests, high permit costs, outdated science and a constant state of change in terms of state and federal regulations. By engaging with the fishing industry, and utilizing their time on the water, and knowledge of the ocean environment, we can develop a better understanding of our changing ocean. The more we learn, the better choices we can make about how to manage and support our fisheries and make effective policy decisions. This presentation will highlight the work we do to support a healthy ocean environment, community engagement, economic development, fishermen driven science, and advocacy for improved marine policies and management that ensure the viability and future of Cape Cod's fisheries and fishing communities.
