Abstract: The dynamical pathways that transport water parcels vertically between the ocean interior and the surface are influenced by mesoscale and submesoscale frontogenesis and by ageostrophic circulations. Vertical velocities transport nutrients, which affects ocean primary productivity and community composition in nutrient-limited regions. The spatial and temporal characteristics of vertical motion have implications for the nature of the biogeochemical response. I will present a method for decomposing the vertical movement (uplift) of isopycnal surfaces and upward motion along sloping isopycnals. I perform the decomposition of the vertical velocity in a process study model of a midlatitude eddying flow field with a range of resolutions and isopycnal slopes and derive a scaling relationship for the importance of the along isopycnal component of vertical motion. I then
relate the nutrient flux to the interaction between vertical velocity processes and biological timescales. Finally, I show how mesoscale and submesoscaledynamics affect biogeochemical tracer flux and community composition in the Western Meditteranean.
