Abstract
The Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) maintains 52 water temperature stations throughout the coast of Massachusetts. With over 6 million data points dating back as early as 1986, these are some of the longest running
continuous bottom temperature datasets on the east coast of the United States. DMF conducts dive-based operations annually to replace and service temperature monitors, and the data collected undergo a quality control process to ensure
accuracy. With climate change continuing to alter the ocean environment, bottom temperature has become an increasingly important resource to understandingmany of these changes. Practical application of these data has been used to assess
causes of the lobster decline observed in Buzzards Bay, the Cape Cod Bay low dissolved oxygen event in 2019 that resulted in a large die off and, has been used to adjust temperature modeling. DMF’s bottom temperature data are available upon request and may be beneficial for a wide scope of projects.
