Abstract:
The Northeast U.S. Shelf, extending from the Gulf of Maine to Cape Hatteras, is one of the most oceanographically dynamic marine ecosystems in the world, supporting fisheries associated with high gross revenues and employment. Its proximity to the western boundary currents of the subpolar and subtropical gyres and position relative to the atmospheric storm track in the North Atlantic establishes a complex interplay between ocean and atmosphere within the region. The combination of remote and local forcing and complex coastal bathymetry drives variability that complicates attempts to predict the physical state within the region, posing a significant challenge for the management of marine resources. Here we provide an overview of the oceanography of the Northeast U.S. Shelf, including the key physical processes that shape distinct habitats within the region. In addition, we highlight dramatic changes observed in recent years that could have implications for the ecosystem.
