Abstract:
Our region is at the cusp of developing 30GW of offshore wind energy farms over the next 10 years at a cost of approximately $120B. While significant, this will only provide a modest contribution to addressing the climate crisis. There are doubts that we will even be able to develop this 30 GW because of conflicts in the shared use of the oceans. If we could design offshore wind farms to strength the marine-ecosystem and provide significant benefits to communities that earn their livelihoods from the oceans, then many conflicts are resolved and thereby offshore wind could contribute much more to addressing the climate crises while also being a large source of new and equitable employment opportunities. This presentation will explore what is needed to enable predicably-reliable nature-inclusive design and operation of offshore wind energy farms.

Bio:
Dan Kuchma has been a professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Tufts University since 2014, and before that he was a professor at the University of Illinois for 17 years. His research, teaching, and professional service have been in Offshore Marine Structures, Earthquake Engineering, Bridge Design and Analysis, Building Codes-of-Practice, and the Design and Mechanics of Structural Concrete. His work over the past decade has focused on Offshore Wind Energy structures and systems, and he has conducted several projects funded the U.S. Bureau of Ocean and Energy Management, the Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, and the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center in this area.
