Successful treatment of high-risk prostate cancer frequently depends on complete resection of all diseases, both gross and microscopic, and accurate identification and removal of tumour cells. Yet, the inability to identify and remove microscopic disease intraoperatively leads to cancer cells being left behind and, therefore, to avoidable recurrence. While gross (>1cm) tumour is detectable by eye and touch, microscopic residual disease (MRD) consisting of clusters 11 of the 00s and 1000s of tumour cells morphologically similar to their normal tissue counterparts cannot be readily visualized. The ability to precisely identify, localize and quantify the spread of the tumour cells during surgery is paramount to the successful outcome of the operation and, if necessary, post-operative radiation. Failure to properly resect and remove residual tumors around the periphery of tumour cavities dramatically increases the risk of cancer recurrence, for example, in breast cancer, doubling the risk of recurrence from 15% to 30% over 10 years. Therefore, a novel platform technology capable of real-time imaging of microscopic foci of tumors intraoperatively with high sensitivity is an evident need for the successfulness of cancer treatment surgeries. Within this presentation, I will also discuss wave-matter interaction at radio and microwave frequencies for sensing and detection applications (Ph.D. research).

Dr. Sevda Mohammadi received her B.Sc. degree with honors in electrical engineering from Urmia University, Urmia, Iran, in 2013 and her M.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from K. N. Toosi University of Technology, Tehran, Iran, in 2015. She completed her Ph.D. in electrical engineering with a focus on RF/Microwave sensor platforms at the University of British Columbia, Canada, in 2021. She has been actively engaged in industry-supported research and development projects, where she contributed to the development of various hardware description language (HDL)-based digital modules/interfacing circuits (from 2015 to 2018) and analog circuit design (from 2020 to 2022). Dr. Mohammadi earned first place in the Iranian Microelectronics Olympiad Competition in 2017. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Berkeley, where she is involved in developing an intraoperative imaging platform for real-time microscopic imaging during prostate cancer resection.
