Inspection and monitoring of bridge structures provides key information for stakeholders to plan and distribute limited resources (e.g., time, labor, money) for efficient asset management. With rapid advances in sensors and sensing technology, civil engineers are provided with novel approaches (other than conventional visual inspection) to better manage their bridge inventories. In this talk, two example sensing techniques (contact and remote) for bridge inspection and monitoring are introduced. In the first example, distributed sensing textiles are installed on a fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite bridge in Hampden, ME to monitor its structural performance under static and dynamic loading tests. Distributed optical sensors were embedded in a textile substrate for the ease of patterning and installation to measure both distributed mechanical strain and temperature data. In the second example, a railway bridge in Rollinsford, NH was instrumented with sensing textiles and inspected by laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV) for structural health monitoring (SHM). Dynamic response of the railway bridge at the midspan under the application of a moving commuter train was measured to extract dynamic parameters (mass, damping, and stiffness) of the bridge. A bounding approach provides a range of values to address the uncertainties in data collection and load estimation.

Dr. Yu is Professor (Structural Engineering) in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell). He is Director of NDT/SHM Lab and Structural Engineering Research Group (SERG), Institutional Lead of TIDC at UML. He received his Ph.D. from M.I.T. in the field of structural engineering and materials, specializing in the remote electromagnetic imaging of concrete structures. His research has been sponsored by NIST, AFRL, NSF, DOE, U.S.DOT, UMass S&T Office, AFFOA, MassDOT, and NextFlex through 24 projects (until 2023). He was the recipient of 2008 ASNT Fellowship Award, 2017 Donald Leitch Award, 2021 ASNT Faculty Award, and 2022 Acorn Innovation Award. His research is currently supported by the U.S.DOT through the UTC (University Transportation Center) Region 1 - Transportation Infrastructure Durability Center (TIDC) (led by UMaine) since 2018. He has published two books, three book chapters, thirteen conference proceedings, and more than 100 journal and conference publications.
