  • CANCELLED: Online Teaching and Learning Strategies
  • Location: Online
  • Contact: CITS Instructional Development
  • Description: A rigorous four-week, fully online certification course that introduces faculty to the current research and best practices for online teaching and learning. Using their own discipline-specific course materials for activities, faculty will work independently, collaboratively with peers from across campus, and with Instructional Designers to design and build one unit of online instruction in a myCourses site. This unit will meet the Quality Online Course Review Rubric criteria and be a model that faculty can reference and replicate as they continue to develop their upcoming fully online course(s).

  • Department of Fisheries Oceanography Weekly Seminar Announcement - Dr. Sean Lucey

  • Description: The School for Marine Science and Technology Department of Fisheries Oceanography Seminar Announcement “MSKeyrun: building multispecies and ecosystem models of Georges Bank to support ecosystem-based fisheries management” Dr. Sean Lucey NOAA Wednesday, March 29, 2023 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm SMAST East, Rooms 101-102 Abstract: Model “keyruns” are defined as “standardized model runs updated with recent data, producing agreed output” as reviewed by the ICES group WGSAM. MS-Keyrun is a project based on model development and testing of objectives that are based on general ecosystem based management questions as well as specific discussions regarding ecosystem-based fisheries management (EBFM) under development in New England. The project currently implements several place-based multispecies assessment models and one food web model of the Georges Bank Ecological Production Unit. Using a “place-based” approach means a common spatial footprint based on ecological production, which contrasts with the current species-based management system of stock-defined spatial footprints that differ by stock and species. Therefore, the input data for this project differs from the input data for most current stock assessments, and the results of these multispecies assessments are not directly comparable with current single species assessments. However, similar processes can be applied to evaluate these models. The goal of the MS-Keyrun project is twofold: 1) develop standard multispecies/ecosystem modeling datasets and 2) use those datasets to develop tools which will be technically reviewed for recommendations for further development and testing prior to consideration for use by management bodies. Here we describe the process of assembling the dataset and outline the models that have been developed to date. In addition we will describe the review process used by WGSAM. Moving forward, we will use this as an opportunity to address questions about the effects of management on the broader ecosystem, and about performance of assessment tools. Bio: Dr. Sean Lucey is a member of the Ecosystem Dynamics and Assessment Branch at the Northeast Fisheries Science Center working on ecosystem modeling and integrated ecosystem assessments (IEAs). He started in the Ecosystem Surveys Branch as an at-sea biological technician working on our various surveys. He received his Masters degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and received his PhD in Marine Science and Technology from SMAST. His dissertation focused on developing an open source version in R of the popular Ecopath with Ecosim modeling software called Rpath. He also extended the functionality of this package to be more useful for management strategy evaluations. Sean has served on multiple regional, national, and international working groups. He is currently a member of the New England Fisheries Management Council's Ecosystem-based fisheries management plan development team and the national EBFM working group. He is also the northeast representative on the NOAA National IEA program’s steering committee. • Department of Estuarine and Ocean Sciences Graduate Seminar Announcement - Emory Wellman

  • Description: This seminar is dedicated to Dr. Brian Howes in honor of his substantial research and achievements as Chancellor Professor and Director of the Coastal Systems Program. The School for Marine Science and Technology Department of Estuarine and Ocean Sciences Seminar Announcement “Reef design and site hydrodynamics mediate oyster restoration and marsh stabilization outcomes” Emory Wellman PhD Student University of Florida Wednesday, March 29, 2023 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm SMAST East, Rooms 101-102 Abstract: The detrimental ecological impacts of engineered shoreline protection methods and the need to protect the coast have prompted research into natural and nature-based infrastructure (NNBI). To balance competing structural and ecological needs, NNBI designs must be assessed in differing environmental settings (e.g., among wave-energy regimes). To examine the effects of setting and design on the provision of shoreline protection, we constructed reefs from two substrates: a novel, biodegradable material (Oyster Catcher, OC) and traditional oyster shell bags (SB) on low- and high-energy eroding salt marsh shorelines. Both reef types minimized marsh elevation loss on the high-energy shoreline, but only SB reefs did so on the low-energy shoreline. Additionally, retreat and loss of marsh vegetation were high on both shorelines. Although reefs did not mitigate marsh retreat on the low-energy shoreline, OC reefs significantly reduced retreat relative to SB reefs and control sites (no reefs) on the high-energy shoreline. Those SB reefs were severely damaged by storms, increasing their areal footprints and losing vertical relief. Conversely, OC reefs on both shorelines steadily recruited oysters and hosted higher densities of larger oysters. To provide shoreline stabilization benefits, oyster-based NNBI must be structurally stable and capable of promoting sustained oyster recruitment and growth. Our results indicate that deliberate decisions regarding NNBI substrate, siting, and configuration can produce reefs which reduce rates of erosion and, in some cases, enhance vertical accretion along marsh edges. ****************************************************************************** Join Zoom Meeting https://umassd.zoom.us/j/97440069270?pwd=L2Z1bDZESTFCKzJYZWduYVhWenYvZz09 Meeting ID: 974 4006 9270 Passcode: 428029 One tap mobile +13017158592,,97440069270#,,,,*428029# US (Washington DC) +13126266799,,97440069270#,,,,*428029# US (Chicago) Dial by your location +1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC) +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) +1 646 876 9923 US (New York) +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston) +1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose) Meeting ID: 974 4006 9270 Passcode: 428029 Find your local number: https://umassd.zoom.us/u/adtxYu9NMO Join by SIP 97440069270@zoomcrc.com Join by H.323 162.255.37.11 (US West) 162.255.36.11 (US East) 115.114.131.7 (India Mumbai) 115.114.115.7 (India Hyderabad) 213.19.144.110 (Amsterdam Netherlands) 213.244.140.110 (Germany) 103.122.166.55 (Australia Sydney) 103.122.167.55 (Australia Melbourne) 149.137.40.110 (Singapore) 64.211.144.160 (Brazil) 149.137.68.253 (Mexico) 69.174.57.160 (Canada Toronto) 65.39.152.160 (Canada Vancouver) 207.226.132.110 (Japan Tokyo) 149.137.24.110 (Japan Osaka) Meeting ID: 974 4006 9270 Passcode: 428029 *************************************************************************** For additional information, please contact Sue Silva at s1silva@umassd.edu
