  • Teaching with Collaborative Worksheets
  • Location: > See description for location
  • Contact: Office of Faculty Development
  • Description: Engaging Students with Collaborative Worksheets Monday, September 19, 2022 12:00-1:00 p.m., Library 213 Facilitator: Jay Zysk, Director, Office of Faculty Development Associate Professor, English and Communication Are you looking for a new way to help students define key terms, explain and analyze course concepts, or work through difficult ideas? Might you be seeking a different mode of assessing such skills‚ perhaps a smaller-stakes activity in preparation for a major test or exam? Or maybe you want to invigorate discussion and dialogue in person, online, or across modalities? Why not experiment with a collaborative worksheet? A collaborative worksheet invites students to work together in an editable document (such as Google Docs) to define terms, explain or connect concepts, and raise questions for each other or the instructor. The worksheet activity fosters writing, communication, and team-based learning skills and can either complement or replace a more traditional discussion board. A collaborative worksheet also enables the instructor to respond in real time to student work, clarifying muddy points or answering questions for the benefit of the entire class rather than for just one or two students. Upon completion, the worksheet provides an organized, often comprehensive review of course material that students can use for later study; likewise, it offers instructors a way to reflect on both what students have learned and what material requires further attention. The session will introduce different permutations of the activity, including one focused on definition and explanation of conceptual content (used in an introductory course) and one focused on research and analysis (used in an upper-division course). To register, please email Ellen Mandly at emandly@umassd.edu. We encourage you to join our programs in person, especially if you are already on campus. If you are not, know that our programming will remain accessible through the continued offering of virtual participation. Please indicate modality preference when registering. Lunch will be provided for all in-person participants.

  • Department of Fisheries Oceanography Seminar Announcement - Donna Dimarchopoulou
  • Location: > See description for location
  • Contact: > See Description for contact information
  • Description: The School for Marine Science and Technology Department of Fisheries Oceanography Seminar Announcement “Ecosystem based fisheries management (EBFM): the Aegean Sea case study” Donna Dimarchopoulou Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Wednesday, September 21, 2022 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm SMAST East, Rooms 101/102 and via Zoom Abstract: Shifting marine ecosystems call for holistic management strategies to minimize potential negative impacts of overfishing and other human-induced stressors on habitats and biodiversity, the economy and food security. EBFM requires that decision making should be based not only on the characteristics of particular commercial stocks, but on all components of the ecosystem. Consequently, a complete fisheries management view would require a combination of both conventional single-species approaches and a more holistic consideration of the ecosystem that takes into account the effects of multi-species interactions, environmental parameters and fishing practices. The Ecopath with Ecosim modeling suite has been a widely used tool in the context of EBFM to describe exploited marine food webs and perform temporal and spatial simulations to analyze the impact of fishing activities and environmental drivers on aquatic ecosystems. Single-species stock assessments have revealed the bad status and overexploitation of data-poor Greek stocks, results also corroborated by ecosystem model simulations. Model predictions have indicated that rebuilding of stock biomass is possible with a reduction in total fishing effort combined with the implementation of marine protected areas. Identifying and filling data gaps is needed to reduce uncertainty and increase model performance and predictive capacity, thus facilitating the progress towards such more holistic modeling and management approaches. Here, the basic concepts and terminology of EBFM will be discussed through the case study of the Aegean Sea, Greece, eastern Mediterranean Sea. ****************************************************************************** Zoom Link https://umassd.zoom.us/j/93758230260?pwd=OHJ5UDloQkZZaCtXcTlBNlR6Qm0rQT09 Meeting ID: 937 5823 0260 Passcode: 426839 One tap mobile +13017158592,,93758230260#,,,,*426839# US (Washington DC) +13126266799,,93758230260#,,,,*426839# US (Chicago) Dial by your location +1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC) +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) +1 646 876 9923 US (New York) +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston) +1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose) Find your local number: https://umassd.zoom.us/u/acosTPRs4V ****************************************************************************** For additional information, please contact Sue Silva at s1silva@umassd.edu

  • Department of Estuarine and Ocean Sciences Seminar Announcement - Jud Kenworthy
  • Location: > See description for location
  • Contact: > See Description for contact information
  • Description: The School for Marine Science and Technology Department of Estuarine and Ocean Sciences Seminar Announcement “Straddling the fence in North Carolina; climate change and the unique biogeography of a large seagrass ecosystem in the western Atlantic Ocean “ Dr. Jud Kenworthy Retired NOAA Wednesday, September 21, 2022 12:30pm – 1:30 pm SMAST East, Rooms 101/102 and via Zoom Abstract: With nearly 2.5 million acres of surface waters, coastal North Carolina has the second largest estuarine ecosystem on the U.S. Atlantic coast. Uniquely located at the biogeographic transition zone between temperate and tropical ecosystems, these coastal waters have both temperate (Zostera marina) and tropical (Halodule wrightii) seagrass species living at their respective “edge of ranges”. While recent surveys indicate that these are currently the largest and healthiest seagrass meadows on the Atlantic seaboard, stressors associated with climate change threaten the status of this ecosystem. This location in the western Atlantic Ocean is one of several global hotspots where poleward-flowing western boundary currents are forecast to warm faster than the global average. This, along with predictions of local sea level rise can affect the growth, distribution, abundance, and reproduction of seagrasses. My presentation addresses the unique resilience characteristics of this seagrass ecosystem and how it is poised to respond to both climate and anthropogenic disturbances. *************************************************************************** Join Zoom Meeting https://umassd.zoom.us/j/97440069270?pwd=L2Z1bDZESTFCKzJYZWduYVhWenYvZz09 Meeting ID: 974 4006 9270 Passcode: 428029 One tap mobile +13017158592,,97440069270#,,,,*428029# US (Washington DC) +13126266799,,97440069270#,,,,*428029# US (Chicago) Dial by your location +1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC) +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) +1 646 876 9923 US (New York) +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston) +1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose) Meeting ID: 974 4006 9270 Passcode: 428029 Find your local number: https://umassd.zoom.us/u/adtxYu9NMO Join by SIP 97440069270@zoomcrc.com Join by H.323 162.255.37.11 (US West) 162.255.36.11 (US East) 115.114.131.7 (India Mumbai) 115.114.115.7 (India Hyderabad) 213.19.144.110 (Amsterdam Netherlands) 213.244.140.110 (Germany) 103.122.166.55 (Australia Sydney) 103.122.167.55 (Australia Melbourne) 149.137.40.110 (Singapore) 64.211.144.160 (Brazil) 149.137.68.253 (Mexico) 69.174.57.160 (Canada Toronto) 65.39.152.160 (Canada Vancouver) 207.226.132.110 (Japan Tokyo) 149.137.24.110 (Japan Osaka) Meeting ID: 974 4006 9270 Passcode: 428029 ************************************************************************** For additional information, please contact Sue Silva at s1silva@umassd.edu
