Abstract:
Continental shelves occupy only 10% of the world’s oceans, but disproportionately support more than 80% of the global fisheries due to their high productivity. As the foundation of the marine food web, phytoplankton convert inorganic nutrients to organic compounds, not only driving pelagic energy flow but also supporting benthic organisms through pelagic-benthic coupling. Phytoplankton dynamics are influenced by local and remote physical forcings, while it is often challenging to quantify the patterns and associated forcings at different spatiotemporal scales. Additionally, very few studies explore mechanistic links between phytoplankton production and benthic organisms such as Atlantic Sea Scallop, an important fishery species on the Northeast U.S. Shelf (NES). Here, I apply a physical-biogeochemical model and an artificial neural network approach to explore phytoplankton dynamics from seasonal to interannual scales on the NES. The resulting biological and physical outputs are then used to drive an Atlantic Sea Scallop scope for growth model in order to assess the spatiotemporal variability of scallop energy budget and growth potential. Our modeling approach allows us to explore mechanisms linking physical forcings with lower and higher trophic levels including important fisheries species on the NES, and to identify knowledge gaps for a better understanding of ecosystem responses to a rapidly changing ocean.

Higher ed accreditation has driven a highly bureaucratic and formulaic approach to program assessment over the last decade-and-a-half. Now a number of voices that were central to this approach, including assessment professionals, faculty who direct assessment, accreditation commissioners, and others are arguing that institutions should implement processes to improve student learning, whatever form that may take, instead of narrowly focusing on measuring student outcomes (often with dubious data). In this workshop, we will discuss this movement and talk about some of the forms an improvement process might take. Participants will explore ways they might shift from an assessment to improvement cycle in their programs.
To register, please email Ellen Mandly at emandly@umassd.edu. We encourage you to join our programs in person, especially if you are already on campus. If you are not, know that our programming will remain accessible through the continued offering of virtual participation. Please indicate modality preference when registering. Lunch will be provided for all in-person participants.

“Microplastics Around Nantucket Island: Land, Air and Sea”

Abstract:
Plastic is a prevalent and global source of pollution that can be transported via wind and water currents. Starting in 2019 we began measuring the abundance of microplastics in intertidal sands and surface seawater at 3 beaches (Surfside, Nantucket Harbor and Madaket Beach) on Nantucket Island to get baselines and to obtain information on how much plastic pollution was potentially impacting the island. Microplastics were found in all the beach sediment and water samples, with highest concentrations occurring in Nantucket Harbor and Madaket Beach. Sources of these microplastics may have been break-down of the larger macro-plastic debris or atmospheric deposition. While the occurrence of the microplastic pollution is not surprising as plastic has been found in all global environments. The microplastics are also present in the marine food web, with detection found in shellfish and seal scat. Recent work is suggesting some of the plastic debris found on the Nantucket beaches can also leach material that can impact plankton. This data will be discussed in terms of what is known and what is still unknown. ********************************************************************************
