  • Teaching with Collaborative Worksheets
  • Location: > See description for location
  • Contact: Office of Faculty Development
  • Description: Engaging Students with Collaborative Worksheets Monday, September 19, 2022 12:00-1:00 p.m., Library 213 Facilitator: Jay Zysk, Director, Office of Faculty Development Associate Professor, English and Communication Are you looking for a new way to help students define key terms, explain and analyze course concepts, or work through difficult ideas? Might you be seeking a different mode of assessing such skills‚ perhaps a smaller-stakes activity in preparation for a major test or exam? Or maybe you want to invigorate discussion and dialogue in person, online, or across modalities? Why not experiment with a collaborative worksheet? A collaborative worksheet invites students to work together in an editable document (such as Google Docs) to define terms, explain or connect concepts, and raise questions for each other or the instructor. The worksheet activity fosters writing, communication, and team-based learning skills and can either complement or replace a more traditional discussion board. A collaborative worksheet also enables the instructor to respond in real time to student work, clarifying muddy points or answering questions for the benefit of the entire class rather than for just one or two students. Upon completion, the worksheet provides an organized, often comprehensive review of course material that students can use for later study; likewise, it offers instructors a way to reflect on both what students have learned and what material requires further attention. The session will introduce different permutations of the activity, including one focused on definition and explanation of conceptual content (used in an introductory course) and one focused on research and analysis (used in an upper-division course). To register, please email Ellen Mandly at emandly@umassd.edu. We encourage you to join our programs in person, especially if you are already on campus. If you are not, know that our programming will remain accessible through the continued offering of virtual participation. Please indicate modality preference when registering. Lunch will be provided for all in-person participants.
