  • Corsair Chat: A History of Putin's War
  • Location: The Marketplace
  • Contact: > See Description for contact information
  • Description: Professor of History Brian Glyn Williams will deliver a hybrid Corsair Chat reflecting on the past year of the Russian war in Ukraine. The event, "A History of Putin's 2022-2023 War: The Role of American Weapons, Ukrainian Resistance, and Russian Folly in the Largest Conflict in Europe Since WWII," will expand on William's March 2022 Corsair Chat at the start of the conflict. The event is free and open to the public, but individuals must RSVP for both in-person and virtual attendance. Professor Williams will take questions from attendees after his presentation. The lecture comes soon after the one-year anniversary of the war and will feature Williams' expertise as a "historicizer" of contemporary warfare, including his time spent working for U.S. Central Command in the war in Afghanistan, to provide a chronicle of the war that millions have followed, but whose recent history remains largely untold. Williams is the author of three books on imperialism and warfare in Ukraine and Russia and has spent time in this disputed region going back to the late Soviet period. The lecture will be held via Zoom and in the University's Marketplace. Parking is available in Lots 4, 5, or 6.

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Writing: A Dialogue
  • Location: Claire T. Carney Library, Office of Faculty Development
  • Contact: Office of Faculty Development
  • Description: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Writing: A Campus Dialogue Tuesday, March 14, 2023 3:30 - 4:30 p.m., Library 213 Participants Dr. Elisabeth Buck, Director, Writing & Multiliteracy Center and Assoc. Professor, Dept. of English & Communication Dr. Katherine DeLuca, Assoc. Professor, Dept. of English & Communication Dr. Shari Evans, Chair and Assoc. Professor, Dept. of English & Communication Dr. Jacqueline O’Dell, Asst. Teaching Professor, Dept. of English & Communication Advances in technology have always attended academic work. None in recent memory has produced as much dialogue and handwringing as those involving artificial intelligence and machine-aided writing. From the Chronicle of Higher Education to the editorial pages of the New York Times and local newspapers, the impressive ability of AI to produce credible and coherent responses to written work in academic settings, and the effect is may have on students, has produced a range of responses. Is this just another tool (like, say, a calculator), or is it unambiguous academic dishonesty? Given that students can - and already are - using AI writing in their coursework across disciplines, instructors are well advised to consider their own individual positions on the subject in order to continue to effectively engage learning and accomplishing course outcomes. The OFD invites you to enter an opening dialogue on AI and writing. The dialogue seeks to explore three central and open-ended questions to inform members of the campus community and help them see the practical considerations one might consider: What is AI writing anyway? In what ways might I be worried about it, and must I? What, if anything, might I do or be aware of as it becomes more a part of our sphere of concern? This dialogue will not establish definitive protocols or policies but will invite people from across the campus to a central place to open up an exchange that has been, variously, a non-issue to alarmism on the order of world changing. This discussion will launch a series of OFD-led programming over the next year that will take up these questions separately, in more detail, and from different institutional and disciplinary perspectives. All are encouraged and bring their interests and questions, as writing relates to all courses and degree programs. To register for this dialogue, please email Ellen Mandy at emandly@umassd.edu.

  • Description: The School for Marine Science and Technology Department of Fisheries Oceanography And Department of Estuarine and Ocean Sciences Joint Seminar Announcement “Lateral exports of inorganic carbon and alkalinity from tidal wetlands: uncounted Blue Carbon capacity” Dr. Z. Aleck Wang Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Wednesday, March 15, 2023 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm SMAST East 101-102 And via Zoom Abstract: Lateral exports of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA) via tidal exchange from highly productive coastal wetlands, such as intertidal saltmarshes and mangroves, are among the largest terms in the wetland carbon budget. These exports are mostly the results of high rates of aerobic and anaerobic respiration in wetland sediments. A significant portion of this exported carbon, mainly in the form of bicarbonate, should be stored in the ocean for thousands of years because of its long residence time. Such lateral exports should thus be accounted as part of the Blue Carbon generated in coastal wetlands. This potentially increases the current wetland blue carbon capacity by several folds, given that the relative magnitude of lateral fluxes vs. organic carbon (blue carbon) storage in wetland sediments. However, the fate of wetland-exported DIC and TA is mostly unknown, which limits our ability to assess Blue Carbon capacity via lateral exports. This synthesis talk presents the latest development in assessing lateral DIC and TA fluxes from a model saltmarsh system on Cape Cod, MA. It proposes a new framework of how to count lateral wetland carbon exports as Blue Carbon. Bio: Dr. Zhaohui Aleck Wang is an Associate Scientist with Tenure in the Department of Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). He is a marine chemist with expertise in aquatic/seawater carbonate chemistry, coastal carbon cycling, ocean acidification, blue carbon and carbon exports from intertidal wetlands, and in situ sensor technologies. His current projects focus on studying the impacts of ocean acidification on shellfish species (e.g., sea scallop) at in situ conditions, developing models to evaluate and project the carbonate system in coastal and shelf systems under climate changes, evaluating blue carbon exports from tidal salt marshes, and developing in situ sensors and sensor networks to study and monitor the coastal carbon cycle and ocean acidification. Aleck earned his M.S. in Oceanography from the University of New Hampshire in 1998 and his Ph.D. in Marine Sciences from the University of Georgia in 2003. He has been a scientist at WHOI since 2009. ******************************************************************************** Zoom Link https://umassd.zoom.us/j/93758230260?pwd=OHJ5UDloQkZZaCtXcTlBNlR6Qm0rQT09https://umassd.zoom.us/u/acosTPRs4V Meeting ID: 937 5823 0260 Passcode: 426839 One tap mobile +13017158592,,93758230260#,,,,*426839# US (Washington DC) +13126266799,,93758230260#,,,,*426839# US (Chicago) Dial by your location +1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC) +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) +1 646 876 9923 US (New York) +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston) +1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose) Find your local number: ******************************************************************************** For additional information, please contact Sue Silva at s1silva@umassd.edu
