  • RA Selection for the 2023-2024 academic year
  • Location: > See description for location
  • Contact: > See Description for contact information
  • Description: Students, are you ready to make the college experience better for your fellow students? Apply for the RA position for the 2023-2024 academic year. Students who are interested in the Resident Assistant position for the next academic year must attend an information session to apply. If you have applied in the past that application will not be in effect for this process. You must re-apply. There are multiple Information Sessions between January 25th and February 3rd. Please look for a session that works with your schedule. Please come to the Grove Private Dining Room for this meeting. For Questions contact Michelle Black at mblack2@umassd.edu

  • Small Teaching
  • Location: Claire T. Carney Library, Office of Faculty Development
  • Contact: Office of Faculty Development
  • Description: OFD Workshop: Small Teaching Wednesday, February 1, 2023 3:00-4:30 p.m. LIB 213 Join OFD Assistant Director Tom Hertweck to explore the pedagogy of "small teaching" as developed by the noted teaching and learning scholar, James Lang. "Small teaching" refers to a pattern of small, often low-stakes improvements or innovations one can make to a course (or part of a course) with the aim of promoting student engagement and student success. We'll examine different tactics, such as prediction or retrieval exercises at the start of class; principles of course design (across modalities); metacognition and transparency; and increasing student motivation. To register for the workshop, please email Ellen Mandly at emandly@umassd.edu. This session will overlap with the New Faculty Institute.

  • Description: School for Marine Science and Technology Department of Fisheries Oceanography and Department of Estuarine and Ocean Sciences Joint Seminar Announcement “Fluid physics-mediated evolutionary convergence in motile behavior among marine plankton” Dr. Houshuo Jiang Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Wednesday, February 1, 2023 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm SMAST East, Rooms 101/102 New Bedford, MA Abstract: Marine plankton are mostly microscopic and slow-moving relative to the macroscopic world. Thus, within the fluid immediately surrounding a plankter, the low-Reynolds-number fluid dynamics together with small-scale diffusion governs the transport of mass and momentum, thereby shaping the energy, matter, and information flows to and from the plankter. The small-scale fluid physics interfaces with the morphology, behavior, perception, response, and interaction of marine plankton to produce a variety of fascinating phenomena, patterns, processes, and functions that are fundamentally important to marine life, population and ecosystem functioning, and evolution. Although morphologically, physiologically, and genetically diverse, marine plankton live in the water environment that is governed by the same small-scale fluid physics; this has inevitably driven convergent evolution of some of their key behavioral traits. Here, we show such convergence through investigating a variety of small marine plankton using high-speed microscale imaging and fluid mechanics methods. We try to demonstrate that the small-scale fluid physics is a key factor that shapes the evolution of marine plankton. Bio: Dr. Houshuo Jiang is a senior scientist in the Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering Department at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI). He received a B.S. degree in meteorology from Nanjing University, China in 1993 and a Ph.D. degree in oceanography from The Johns Hopkins University in 2000. He joined the WHOI staff in 2000 as a postdoctoral scholar, was appointed an assistant scientist in 2002, and was promoted to associate scientist in 2007 and to senior scientist in 2017. His research interests include small-scale biological-physical interactions, plankton fluid dynamics, ecological fluid dynamics, and ocean wind modeling. ************************************************************************** Zoom Link https://umassd.zoom.us/j/93758230260?pwd=OHJ5UDloQkZZaCtXcTlBNlR6Qm0rQT09 Meeting ID: 937 5823 0260 Passcode: 426839 One tap mobile +13017158592,,93758230260#,,,,*426839# US (Washington DC) +13126266799,,93758230260#,,,,*426839# US (Chicago) Dial by your location +1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC) +1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago) +1 646 876 9923 US (New York) +1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma) +1 346 248 7799 US (Houston) +1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose) Find your local number: https://umassd.zoom.us/u/acosTPRs4V **************************************************** For additional information, please contact Sue Silva at s1silva@umasd.edu
